Our Committee

We are proud to be headed by a diverse team from a variety of backgrounds, and with a range of interests and abilities.

Joseph Layton-Smith

President and Co-founder

I am an undergraduate reading Religion and the Tibetan Language, and a convert to Buddhism since the age of eleven. My lineage and devotion lie in the profound wisdom of the Sakya Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

My sincere aspiration is that this society may become a beacon of Dharma and a source of learning for everybody in the Oxford Community.

Luna Lu

Welfare Officer and Co-founder

I am an undergraduate reading Theology and Religion. I grew up as an Almost-Buddhist, and am now a Buddhist following the Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna paths. My intention to found this society arises from a wish to invite You to come and see the Dharma, to find a raft suited to one’s own journey, and to leave it behind upon crossing to the farther shore, just as the Buddha taught.

Reetam Bhattacharya

Secretary

I am an international undergraduate studying Psychology and Linguistics from the United States. Though I am not myself Buddhist, I find value in learning from the teachings of Buddhism especially as they reflect and reshape my understand of the Hinduism under which I grew up. In working for this society I hope to contribute to the learning and spiritual journeys of others as Buddhism has for myself.

Karen Jiang

Treasurer

I am a graduate student in Buddhist Studies with a deep interest in consciousness. My work brings together suttas, tantras, commentaries, Buddhist philosophy, and meditation traditions, along with insights from psychology, neuroscience, and my earlier scientific training. I was raised in a Buddhist family and immersed in Mahayana and Vajrayana since childhood. I’m grateful for the chance to contribute and hope my efforts can be of benefit to others.

God of gods, bhagavān Mañjughoṣa, please clear away the darkness of ignorance entirely from my mind, and unlock a hundred doors to courageous eloquence and unhindered understanding of all that can be known!
